The Big Book of Glych The Ramblings of Glych |
 |

I bought my tickets for the train! only $171 and that was because I wanted to get my tickets sent to me instead of picking them up there so that was a $15 charge.
I'll be leaving from Minneapolis 7:30am Wed. May 28th, staying in Boston the night of the 29th*, and then heading off in the morning to Maine to arrive in Portland at 11:30 am. it'll take me 2 1/2 days to make the trip, but still well worth it for the price.
*Couchsurfing.com is my new favorite site. My friend Erik told me about it when I was having trouble finding a place to crash the night in Boston. Well, lo and behold I find a Graphic Designer with 100% positive feedback from over a hundred people willing to put me up for the night. How cool is that?
I love you Internet!

BOSTON-ITES! SKIP TO END, PLEASE!
So I've FINALLY heard from Nathan. After I e-mailed him that I took out a storage unit because I hadn't heard from him. Apparently his mother's been missing since mother's day which has left his family worried sick and panicked as to her whereabouts. Understandable. But still... You could have called, man. Written me, typed out anything, sent a carrier pigeon, anything to let me know. But you didn't.
I'm not mad at Nathan. I'm disappointed. Had Nathan let me know a week ago "Sorry, I can't," I would have been disappointed at the situation without being angry and certainly not feeling bad about Nathan. But since he neglected to call me or write me back any kind of response, I'm now mad at the situation and disappointed at Nathan. Not a good thing.
It hasn't affected our friendship, though, all things aside. I mean, at least money wasn't involved.
On the note of storage, I am a negotiating goddess! Before Seamus and I drove up there (he kept me company today ^_^) after picking up Sammy's Pizza boxes (a big "Thank You" to the big_ragu !), we headed to Acorn Mini Storage to check out the unit and find out about the other things I negotiated. All things fit, so I signed the contract, put my locks on my unit, and I'll start moving boxes into there starting next week as they get packed.
This is what I negotiated to explain to you why I'm so awesome:
1)10'X10' storage units in the Twin Cities area range in price from $120-$300 a month depending on if it's temperature regulated, on the top floor or the bottom floor, location, etc. etc. etc.
The Glych Deal: $70 for the first month, and only $121 for the second, totaling only $191 dollars to store all of my worldly possessions.
2)U-Haul trucks cost anywhere between $19.99 a day for a 10' truck, to $79.99 a day for a 20' truck. This does not include replacing the cost of gas, insurance, or paying for miles you put on the truck as some in-town U-Haul places like the charge.
The Glych Deal: Free 14' truck rental. Reserved for 5/28/08 at 5pm.
3)You have to buy locks for your storage unit. These cost anywhere between $8.99 to $70 depending upon quality, etc. etc. etc.
he Glych Deal: 2 Locks Free for unit.
Let's run this down really quick. Had I purchased everything at face value without taking the time to call around, negotiating deals, tracking down coupons, etc. etc. etc. I would have spent upwards of $342 upfront. After doing all of this legwork and honey sweet negotiation, I will only spend $70 for this month, and $121 for next month, totaling only $191.
That's 45% off.
When I was younger, my parents used to take me to the car dealership when they were shopping for a new car. When my mom bought her 2000 Silver Isuzu Trooper, she had talked off over 40% of the advertised price for the car because she (like me) did the research. It took me about 4 hours to cut down the price. Which means if you divide the $151 I saved by those 4 hours, I just paid myself $37.75 an hour. :) Next time you're making a big purchase and you are near the Glych? Take the Glych. She will save you monies.
BOSTON:
I'm going to take the Train, but I ran into a snag, hence why I haven't bought my tickets yet. There is no direct line between the Twin Cities and Portland Maine, the closest large city to Readfield where I'll be staying. There's a connection in Boston between the Backbay station and the North Main Station (and then on to Portland on the Downeaster line), but Amtrak.com won't let me book it because apparently that connection is too tight and too late for them to guarantee it. This means, I'm going to be spending a night in Boston if I miss it. When I called them up, Dawn on the other end recommended that I ask a friend in the city if I could stay with them or get a hotel room and catch the Downeaster line the next morning. I realized, this is a GREAT idea...
My sister lives in Boston, but her husband's family will be staying during that time for several weeks so she's overworked and overwhelmed and it'll probably be way too tight to stay with her. I called but only got voicemail to ask, but it would really put her out. I know that Dirk Tiede just moved to Boston, but I don't know where (and since he's traveling right now, I don't know if he'd even be there), but I seem to recall others on my friend's list living in or near the city.
EDIT: I just got a call back from my sister. She'll be in Rhode Island for the days I'd need to stay with her.
If you live near or in Boston and want to put up a very grateful Glych for the night, I won't turn you down. Again, I haven't bought my tickets, but I'm looking at either the 29th(Th), 30th(F), or 31st(S) of May that I would need temporary lodgings. I'll draw you a thing!
You like things, don't you?

So I told you a have bi-polar luck right? I've mentioned this? Okay...on that note, I shall run down for you the return of the crazy.
First off, my relationship is going well. he's a little clingy and needy and calls me every day (multiple times) but I respect and understand it's because of his brain makeup being a high-functioning autistic. Like I said, I find most of it downright adorable. In fact, I'm supposed to see him tomorrow for a long day of fun and hanging out before I'm doomed to packing.
Speaking of packing, the boxes are beginning to pile up in the room. I say the room and not the house, because whereas I currently have a stack of over 30 boxes with another 100 large format Fed Ex boxes arriving Monday from there (had to open a business account and everything!) for my books, downstairs they've only acquired about 20 for all 5 of them. Oh, this is going to be fun to watch! Between the 5 of them, one is completely paid up with me. One has promised to pay me by the end of this week (tomorrow, we'll see where that goes), one owes me for the bills for ONLY this month and then he'll be paid up with me, and one owes me over $401.98 if you count the bills for this month. Probably closer to $508.16 once I've calculated the bills for this month. For the record, this is where I stand with my roomies:
Erik: Cool! -owes me $106.28 for this months portion of the bill Diana: Cool! -paid in full. Pete: Thin. -owes me $98.00 for last month and $106.28 for this month. Andy: Shit List. -owes me $106.28 for this month, $98.00 for last month, and the $303.98 for past groceries and other costs.
Folks, this is why you don't just flop into a room mate situation. Because you don't know who you're getting. Learn from my mistake.
Erik and Diana are both freelance artists. Erik is my friend and has done little to anger me. He let me move in here when I had no place else to go after Ryan left. I have no problem with him. Diana I'm also not bothered with in the least. Pete's been a little rough to live with and Andy's been a nightmare. Personally, Andy has done little to impress me since he moved in. I wish I could afford to wipe my hands clean of it, but aside from getting him to a sign an IOU and taking him to court, I don't know what else I can do to guarantee this money from him. We had no written contract as to our arrangement. I don't want to sue, but $400+ is $400+. And I am a starving artist.
I'm broke. Not where I was last summer when I needed your help. I'm very close, but unlike over last summer where I had no work lined up, I have LOADS of jobs lined up over this summer. Just one of my jobs will leave me with $2500 for coloring, while another I'll be earning $900 per story for a website. I'll be writing trivia for about $50 a week on top of all of this, so it's not like I don't have some future prospects once I'm in Maine. It's just the frustration over the whole thing, you know?
As for getting to Maine, I researched a few options. If I take a plane, a round trip ticket is $500. That's after shopping around between a lot of different travel sites as well as contacting the airlines directly. If I take a bus, it's $183.00 and it'll take me a day and a half to get there. I looked into Driving. Originally Google Maps wanted me to drive 1523 miles with gas as it stands, costing me over $600. I muddled with the routs that google maps set up and realized I could cut my trip to only 879 miles if I cut through Canada above the lakes. This still would have cost me $over $300 in gas and since I had to pawn my GPS unit Mom gave me for rent money, would be very difficult to navigate the back roads of Canada so I thought...eh...naw...
Teague recommended I try the train. For a one way trip from Minneapolis to Boston and then from Boston to Portland Maine is about $170 and will take me about the same amount of time as if I flew since I won't be dealing with layovers. Boo and Yah. I can take two carry on bags aboard (the train from Boston to Maine won't allow for checked baggage) so that means one bag shall be my living amenities for two months (clothes, soap, shampoo, hairbrush, etc.) while the other shall contain art stuff (my wacom tablet, paint, sketchbooks, ink, etc.). I realize in order to do what I need to do this summer, I'm going to have to bring my paper and stuff with me as well as files. So, I'm going to upload all of my files to my p2p server that I need, using it as a temporary storage drive for the purpose, and ship myself the paper and NS originals via Fed Ex. Ah, planning.
Since I haven't heard anything from my "room mate" coming from CA, I'm making other accommodations to put my stuff in storage for the 2 months I'm gone as a "just in case" Nathan drops off the face of the earth. I just have to figure out what to do with my car for the 2 months I'm gone since I can't take it with me. Grrr...
Oh well, I should get back to work. I have a lot of packing and a lot of work yet to do.

My new roomate... His car broke down in Utah while he was on his way to Minneapolis. So he's stuck back in CA and unsure when he'll be out.
I'll keep you all posted.
Tonight, Philo!

Behold the Pyramid Scheme!
(It's an animated gif file so you can get an idea of how it really has no top, bottom, up, down, or sideways about it.)
The assignment was to create a "3 legged/footed something-a-ma-jig in at least 80% wood." Most people in the class created furniture like chairs, tables, and even a couch. I can really only think of one other sculpture for the final which consisted of these little legged egg carrying things taking eggs back to a nest. One thing I'm really proud of is, sure, I have 3 feet on it, obviously. But no matter how you turn it, it only rests on either 1 of the three feet, or 3 points of the sculpture, creating the "3 legs" of the sculpture. Ha ha! I think he liked it. Thanks to big_ragu for the advice and aide of his dremil! I totally owe you a Betty Page on a Motorcycle holding guns!
In other news, the Roadkill Aiken Fundraiser Auction (or whatever they're calling it) is live on E-Bay! If you haven't been reading my journal, here's the re-explanation:
Bob "Roadkill" Aiken was one of the sweetest people I ever met. He looked scary at first. He was a tall man with crazy wolverine side hair and a bald top, piercings and tattoos, and a heart the size of Texas on steroids. Everyone who knew Roadkill, liked him. Several loved him as you would a brother. Working on TVTV, he really helped me feel at home and welcome there. Shortly after we wrapped up principal shooting, Roadkill's family got the bad news that he had a terminal brain tumor. They operated, removing what they could (almost 50% of his brain) but that only bought him time, not life. The Source had a fund raiser to fulfill Roadkill's last wish and cut into the medical bills a bit. Together, they raised over $10k so that he could go down to Disneyworld in Florida, and hug Tigger. Which he did. When he returned, it wasn't long before he left us. Now, that $10k only dented the mounting medical bills and paid for the trip to Florida, but it didn't really solve the financial problems caused by terminal illness like Roadkill's. Hence why we're trying to help.
So we're having another fund raiser auction this time to give his widow some help to pay for the thousands of dollars they owe the hospital for his medical care in his last year of life. It's sad, but by dying, he actually saved his family a lot more debt versus if he had lived longer. That's how sick he was there at the end.
Here's the link to all of the pieces I donated. Some of which haven't been seen anywhere online. Ever. Many of the pieces are either original limited prints (signed by me) or original artwork (also signed by me in most cases). There are some Sonic The Hedgehog original prints available here as well as many No Stereotypes and NonPersons originals and prints as well.
All proceeds from this auction go to Roadkill's family to pay off their medical expenses. I receive nothing from these. I wouldn't want to. This is beyond a good cause. In fact, without an LJ cut, here are the links to each individual piece of work I donated. There are other things in the auction, like toys and such (there's a really cool Darth Vader figuring for instance) so don't fret to click the link above. But here are the direct links to the pieces I submitted. Now get to the bidding. The prices are good. I didn't set them; Jason, and the manager of the auction did. I did not take the pics. They're not the best in the world, but I do have digital copies of most of this work. So if you would like better pics, please e-mail me. Thank you! Now again, get to the bidding. Shoo!

So being down and out for 4 days really screwed up my homework finishing schedule. I didn't finish the FX assignment in time to upload for class today for my coloring for comic art class. The first assignment I've missed since starting school and it was a simple EASY one. But Mariam and I were up until about 5am working on our kite watching chairs made out of matchsticks (the last assignment in my 3D class). I'm happy with mine despite the lack of craft involved it just took so long...I had to get SOME sleep last night so instead of running for a 76 hour record of no sleep, I broke it by sleeping for about 3 hours this morning which was desperately needed.
I think we were a little loud, though, because Mariam's room mate was in kind of a rude mood this morning and said in her room (under her breath, I think, but I heard, despite my hearing) "This isn't your place." I don't know if she was speaking to something in her room since she had broken glass slamming her door, or to me, or about me or whatever, but her feelings are completely justified I feel since we were being pretty loud until 5am or so... I kept telling Mariam it's not problem with me. I'm used to people not liking me but she was sensitively embarrassed and hurt. I kept trying to assure her I wasn't hurt. It's understandable. I just kind of wish her roomie would have come up to us last night and said "Hey, you're being a little loud" or "it's kind of late" and I would have taken the hint. I would have complied. I would have felt the same way. I could understand why she would have been pissed that last night the last thing she heard was me and the first thing she saw this morning was me... Totally understandable. So we left and I have no idea why she was really in the mood to begin with. It's all conjecture with no proof... But I think I put the mystery together.
Class was short today. Spent most of the day on the grass in an impromptu picnic with Seamus, Heather, Kat, Jane, and Zed, Jaime, and Heather's Mom all at random moments. T'was good to just sit out on the grass and soak up the sun. Good stuff, that sun.
Seamus and I have a date (GASP!) to go see Iron Man in a week. We'll see where that goes.
Up until now I've always dated for love. But Seamus is openly casually dating girls right now, admitted this to me, and asked me to see the movie. Well, so why not? I've never casually dated someone before. Let's see how this whole "casual dating" scheme works...
More news to come on life issues when I have the energy to type about them.

I was up all night Thursday into Friday morning in and out of the bathroom to give sacrifice to the porcelain alter in the bathroom. A religious sacrament repeated the following evening.
I slept most of the rest of the time save for leaving to get some junk food for my belly yesterday.
Took a shower today.
I think I can make up my homework.
Don't eat the potato salad from Kowalski's after 6pm on Thursday >.<

Your Personality Is Like Acid
|
A bit wacky, you're very difficult to predict.
One moment you're in your own little happy universe...
And the next, you're on a bad trip to your own personal hell!
At your best: You understand the world completely, and every ordinary experience is sublime.
What people like about being around you: You say and do the craziest things. You're very entertaining.
What people dislike about being around you: You're unpredictable. Your mood swings are quite intense.
How addicted people get to you: They pretty much don't get addicted to you.

I'm not depressed right now. Well, I'm not over being depressed last year, and aside from tiny black clouds here and there, I'm no longer feeling as depressed as I was this time last year. That being said, I've been writing a new friend about depression and I realized I articulated it quite well. Apologizes to Kynn for reposting this here after posting it as a comment in his LJ, but I feel it's a good articulation of what I was going through then. In e-mails back and forth with my new friend, I've been responding to her, so the cut below is going to be referencing some stuff not otherwise mentioned. It's the heart of what's under the cut that I want to post here because that's what LJs are for; communication:
*** ( Articulating My Past Depression... ) ***
Now onto the workload...
I've been spending WAAAAAAAAYYYYY too much time in the shop working on my project due Wednesday (pics of me working on said project below). I also have a page due before midnight tomorrow of colors I haven't even started on yet, tomorrow's advising day so no classes, but I still have to go to the school, and I'm beyond broke because my roomies owe me more money for this month (and one of them for several months past). So I'm forced to work outside of school just to make ends meet. Grr...
Here's some art!
My 4-armed Janis Jopin for Illustration. Acrylic on Canvas.
A pic of one of the wooden hands for my 3D project. They have since been painted and mounted to the sides of the pyramid not yet built, but this is a pic a few days old.

Me working on one of the feet. Also an older pic. All of the feet and hands are now done and painted, but it's a cool pic of me all dusty.
Also He's Dead, Jim.

There's a lot on the net about The Orphan Works Act they're trying to pass in congress.
According to Maradydd, there's many misconceptions about it. DeviantArt got people into an uproar over it with their post, Good ol' Kynn has had his say, and there's a fantastic MP3 that explains everything here.
But here's the word from the horses mouth. No interpretation, and no miscommunication. The wording itself is in a lot of ways legalese, but Maradydd is the most correct and concise in her statements.
Still...
Something to keep your eye on.

Well, maybe not.
Yesterday I started the actual cutting, gluing, and shaping work on my sculpture (of which I'll post pics of later in it's process stages). I cut all of the wood for the limbs of my legged and armed pyramid, gluing the pieces into blocked and clamped them to be shaped later. I also roughed out one hand out of 2 (the feet have as yet not been attempted)...Then I tried to take a shortcut by using the wrong saw to cut the arm shorter... Well, the hand got caught in the blade, jammed my left pinky finger pretty good and went flying across the room... breaking in 2 pieces.
5 hours work, gone, I thought...
Well, I glued the two pieces together and hand held them (being my own clamp for a odd shaped piece like that). I'm not mad that I might have lost 5 hours worth of work because it broke. I'm mad at myself for stupidly putting myself in that position. Had I been patient, there wouldn't have been a problem and I might have gotten a little more work done on the other hand.
Grrr....
I'll check it today and see if I can maybe salvage the limb. If not, I LUCKILY have JUST enough wood left over to make another one. Luckily.
In other news, my Ideation project is moving at a snails pace. I'm going to make a good long poll this weekend I'd really appreciate if all of you could fill out for me to help me define some of the family groups of the arts.
Obviously Painting and Illustration are near each other, but I don't know if watercolor is between? I'm going to have a "writing" solar system with literature, poetry, playwriting, and essays, but should Poetry be the gas giant in the system since some of our earliest writing is poetry or should literature because it's grown much larger than poetry in the popularity scale? How do you define importance of things artistically?
What of craftsmanship? Architecture? Music? Should each genre of music have it's own planetoid? Should I separate it into centuries? Should the Beatles get their own planet in my art galaxy?
I do hve the funky idea of having Comics growing out of the Illustration system like a comet with a tiny space ship flying between there and literature for "graphic novels" but that's only one detail of the whole picture. This is going to take a lot of planning and a lot of time. Speaking of which, I need to finish my homework from last week @_@
So much to do!
Courage, folks... I'm a professional. Don't try this at home.
in other news, I stole this from my roomie Erik.
Is it not amazing?

So last night's Philo was fun. My new friend Jeff came down from the Coon Rapids area to see it (He's Big_Ragu on the LJ there folks). He also bought me drinks and some foodage as we talked about everything from time travel to guns. Needless to say we're fast friends.
After Jeff and I parted ways, I headed over to the school and drew from my friends until about 2am for the homework due at 1pm today. I finished the rest of it this morning and headed to school for class. Class was uneventful. Saw a lecture, drew from life... BUT one of my fucktard roomies (the ONLY one who has paid me any of the money he owed me) called mid-class to tell me not to cash the check he wrote because it would bounce. Yes, it's good that he called before I tried to cash it, but it's oh-so-bad that that money's not there. So he's back on the short list.
Tonight I have my comic colors due before midnight, but I'm already half done with them, so that's good. Tomorrow, I'm going to head into school early in order to at least attempt to cut all of my pieces and start sanding down my glued blocks with the angle grinder. I have one week to finish a project we were given 3 to finish. Why must I have done this to myself? Why, glych, why!?!? You bitch. I might take pics of the process, not sure. I have 2 hands and 3 feet to grind out of wood, and a 4 sided compound miter jointed pyramid to build. Any mathematicians out there in the audience? Anyone? Beuller? Yeah...angles suck.
I STILL have a LOT of work to process for my art galaxy, so expect a long post about that tomorrow. For now, courage.

HRD Portraits. I'm usually not a photography fan, but these are really quite remarkable.
Calligraphy kicks ass! I had this old art teacher who used to emphasize the importance of learning calligraphy. Despite the horrid nature of my handwriting, I did learn how to write calligraphy decently. It's damn hard to do this well and one page takes me DAYS to finish if done to this level of detail. I couldn't even imagine trying to do something like this myself. It's a dying art, sadly. Support Calligraphers everywhere!

Below is a 75 question Meme stolen from VOn and Moggy, and posted behind an LJ cut because it's so frickin' long.
Tonight Philo. Big Ragu is coming down to watch the show so it's the first time I'm meeting him. Should be fun. I should have him bring me down some of his micro-brew goodness, but I'm not going to push the issue.
I'll be posting a lot to the website today. I should be working on homework, I have an art galaxy to plan through and some life drawing and coloring work to do, but the site's been neglected for too long. There's some stories and templates to post to people.
Finals this month so we're in the final stretch.

So...
I'm insane.
In the next two weeks I'm making a 4 sided piramid with feet and hands sticking out of it. I'll also be re-working my MCAD website, illustration, drawing from friends for class, and ...oh yeah...
Building a whole frickin' art galaxy for an art project.
This means I'll be asking lots of weird little questions and probably making an OKCUPID.COM Test I'll ask you guys to take to determine where stuff lies on the chart.
I'll be writing about the process of this more later.
For now, here are several links of awesomeness I found online.

I don't care what you say, Ants are awesome.

Why didn't I think of that? Brilliant! Random! And Awesome!

If this man weren't married, I'd do naughty things to him.
Speaking of naughty, I've been writing a story quite hurriedly recently in order to make enough to pay rent. I had writer's block for several weeks when originally given the project but only made a breakthrough in the writing with some advice from s friend. Progress though I made, (pleasing the clients needs, 16 pages out of 20), it wasn't fast enough to get paid on time to pay rent.
I show my client what I have, explain the situation. He gives me an advance which is enough.
Why is it that some of the most gentlemanly people I'm worked with in business are those that work naughtily in comics. Josh at Slipshine is a sweetheart. I'll say it again. He's a sweetheart and a man I trust to be a man of his word. And then there's this other client, one I've had for years.
You know, mainstream publishing, you could learn from these guys that if you take care of your people, they'll take care of you.

First, the links.
101 of the worlds most useful websites according to some guy. See, I personally find Worth1000.com impressively useful for my needs and I didn't see it on the list.
Facinating and highly logical arguments, captain.
I want this to be the walls of my office :)
Big Ragu might appreciate this. :) It seems we both feel similar.
competition bad. Kill competition @_@
A Bridge to/from the future?. Click on both images. It's a re-imagined twist on the typical suspension bridge.
Newton had a dirty little secret notebook.
An interesting art show.
All I can think about is The 5th Element when Bruce Willis says "Lady, I speak English and Bad English."
I support this comic 100%.
my fellow MCADian Mariam's beginning animation project animation.
Now, the lesbians.
I guess there's some controversy as to whether or not this comic by Patrick Alexander is offensive. It's spawned some parodies and heated comments on the site and around the web.
And the parodies.
Some of the better parodies I've seen here are Megan Rose's, Josh Lesnick's, and Scott Gallitan's.
I don't really speak up much about webcomics anymore. It's not because I don't care, quite the opposite; it's just that my focuses have changed and I chose to focus on my work instead of focus on my marketing of my work. Going on forums and talking about stuff, and commenting on sites and writing and getting into the heart of the community is all good, but it takes a lot of effort and time to do that hence why I just usually stay out of it and bite my lip because most of the time it's just meladrama and things settle down.
Not this time...
Look, I like Alexander's work. I have quietly for a while now. I think he's funny! I find this hilarious! And guess what guys; I'm bisexual *gasp* and not offended. The definition of sexual harassments in the workplace is unwanted sexual attention. yes, there's a fine line between if a girl enjoys flirting on a jobsite or if she would prefer to be treated as if she weren't a woman. Flirting in the workplace for me in the past has relieved tension. I've had my butt slapped on the job by friends; people whom I let give me that contact. Contact, to me, was harmless and unoffensive. on one job, I felt uncomfortable with one particular guy trying to flirt with me and touch me, and I asked him to stop. He did just that and respected my space for the next 2 years i worked there with no further incident. This is kind of like that. It's harmless, but if people don't want contact, then don't have contact.
That means if it offends you, don't read it.
I like Alexander's work. I have for a while now, and I probably will be reading more of it in the future.
As for the rest of you who think he's stirring up the pot a little too much, grow up. You can't take a joke?

Okay...so my last post left me sounding like a loony...
And maybe I am...
Points were raised in the comments about how we're probably little more than a speck on the windshield of the universe (my words) and alien life is probably not trading with our military leaders...
My mind has been changed... You guys are right. We probably aren't in secret alliances with aliens... but I still think there's been a few conversations between human big wigs and space travelers.
That being said...
It made me think a little bit about us, we humans. We're NOT ready to explore space. Seriously. I mean, if we can't even communicate and respect the other intelligent life on our home planet, how do we expect to do anything good out there?
Take Elephants for example. Highly intelligent creatures. For years it has been theorized that they have a genetic memory (Link 1 and Link 2 for more information to describe how they're testing this theory). Now I say this is ONLY a theory because it's very difficult to prove... Mostly, they assume that Elephants pass on information like the locations of watering holes and graveyards through genetics because how could they otherwise, right? Save that a whole language is starting to be uncovered to discredit this theory to a point (again Link 1 and Link 2 for more info. Also here's a cool list of Elephant Facts!). Part of me wonders if they have an oral tradition similar to tribal populations all over the world stemming from the Aborigines in Australia to the Haida tribe in the Yukon.
Elephants might have gods they worship. They might be spiritual. They mourn their dead (Link 1, Link 2, Link 3), and have a self awareness that is remarkable to our own (Link!).
We can even teach them to paint!
See?
They have similar eyesight to us, even similar night vision to ours. Incredible hearing, and can be quite affectionate to others and to humans they're close to. They also are very empathic to feelings around them. I remember when I was very young my parents took me to the zoo. There was an elephant ride, where you could ride on the back of an old softy in this loop they set up in the elephant habitat, get your picture taken, and feel awesome because you can tell people you rode on the back of an elephant and see, I even have a picture. I was only about 5 or 6, but when I was being prepped on my elephant another girl about my age fell off of hers in the middle of the habitat. Now if you've ever stood next to an elephant, you know they're about 10' tall. Needless to say, she started crying, loudly, after hitting her head like she did when she fell. She sat there on the ground crying her eyes out with her hysterical parents doing everything they can to reach her. Their daughter was in the middle of a habitat with about 6 male and female elephants, some young and brash, others old and tamer... The zoo attendants did everything they could to try and woo the elephant she had fallen off away from her to prevent him from trampling her, but he wouldn't budge. See, 2 of the other elephants in the habitat were very upset by the girl's crying and violation of their territory. They were making loud noises and stamping their feet and blowing air and getting all riled up, but this big ol' softy of an elephant she fell off of wouldn't let them get between him and her. He was very, very careful NOT to step on her, crying and sitting on the ground as she was. A few zookeepers came into the habitat and removed her, but not before the elephant wrapped his trunk around her like an arm and picked her up from the ground. The girl stopped crying before being returned to her hysterical parents. My ride was hardly as eventful.
I don't know if the elephant was trained to save small children from roughians of it's species. I do remember overhearing one of the zookeepers state "wow, when did he learn how to do that?" Somehow I doubt it was in the "just in case X happens" manual these guys have to read before working an elephant habitat but I could be wrong, I've yet to view an official one.
So elephants don't actively attack us. They do happen to kill more tourists each year in Africa than Lions. But then again, so do Hippos, and Hyenas... I doubt there are late night secret elephant hooded meetings around watering holes and firelight where they vibrotalk to each other in whispers of how they'll someday rule the world away from humans with lots of elephant villianish laughter. Despite the coolness of that thought and the awesomeptitude of that visual... I just don't see it happening. I know... I just totally broke your hearts giving you that candy lick of coolness just to shatter your dreams by saying it's not so (OT...what WOULD elephant maniacal laughter sound like?)... But back to the topic at hand, elephants don't hunt us. They don't kill us (actively). In fact, the majority of these deaths are pouchers and tourists too stupid to know you don't pose next to a wild animal. Elephants live. They seek water, the eat, they mate, they raise their young, they walk, they wade in water, they play, they hug each other with their ears and trunks...they live...
Why are we humans so obsessed with death? Our own deaths (need to look younger, live longer, live healthier, mean something important, leave something behind of ourselves so future generations know our names as household words!), the deaths of others (we mourn our dead too, but some people take it to an extreme. You know what I mean you Heath Ledger lackies clawing at the orderlies removing his body from the hotel. Seriously folk, WTF?), and the possibilities of killing others (Crime in general, War in general, the Hippocratic Oath, the hundreds of fighting style disciplines on our planet, etc. etc. etc.)...
We constantly think about death, ponder it...What's beyond? The Egyptians thought the afterlife was just like now only lasting for forever. If you liked working your fields or fishing that was your eternity, filled with your bliss. They had no known ideas of a hell. The Greeks had the idea of an afterlife, but everyone went to Hades and everyone suffered there, even the good ones. Monotheistic religions like Christianity, Judaism, Islam, etc. have their ideas of Heaven and Hell. I'm a Taoist and believe in the energies of spirit, but the scientist in me believes in the solidity of matter and the ethereal nature of energy (Light is both -like get this-*best faked stoner giggle* It's like a particle.....AAAAAANNNND a wave, dude....crazy shit, no?)... I'm not haunted by death like others are. I expect it. I actually look forward to it when it comes. I'm not ready for it, but damn I'm going to certainly enjoy the LONG ride before I get there. Not only that, but I'd finally know if we just wink out or if I'll be looking over a table with St. Peter and Jesus looking over the book of my life and giving me that "gee, I don't know" look as they flip through the more colorful chapters.
I have no idea about death. I'm not paid to ponder it. Descartes was, though. When he said "I think, therefor I am." He was establishing that the only constant in the humility of being humanity is we have no idea what's really going on. We can't trust our bodies, our bodies could lie to us (Phantom Limbs for example). We can't trust our eyes because those two can be lies (His example in Meditations is looking out the window and seeing men in black top hats in the rain. How does he know that there is a window, that those are men and those tophats are indeed on what we call heads?). We can't trust our ears because those lie to us as well (Musical Hallucinations for example Link 1 and Link 2, something of which I'm afflicted with randomly). He carries this to the tounge and nose of course, but what Descartes was getting at, is that the only things we can rely on are our minds. It's the only thing we can prove because the act of trying to prove it PROVES it. Descartes whole long ramblings about men in hats and proof of god (that being that he's perfect and we're not ergo we only have the idea of perfection because he must have put it there) all was trying to stab at what makes us human. What makes us self aware? How do we know we know we know where here? (say it again out loud to yourself, it's no typo)
Well, Descartes was wrong. Being self aware isn't something uniquely human. Not anymore.
I think we need to stop worrying so much about death and just start living more. I have no idea how people should do that. Stop killing people, maybe.
Okay, stopping the killing of all people who will be killed will take some time...
Let's start smaller. Let's stop killing elephants.
Why do we really need to do this:

For what, this?

To make crap like this?
I'm sorry, but we have plastic now. If you want that nice ivory look, there are ways to mix plastic to resemble it. Let the elephants walk and talk and live a little.
Maybe they'll stop attacking tourists because they won't fear us anymore.

The one-day content strike is on for this Friday, March 21, from midnight GMT to midnight GMT.
For 24 hours, we will not post or comment to LJ. Not in our own journals, not in communities. Not publicly, privately, or under friends-lock.
This is a protest that will have long-lasting effects, showing up forever in the daily posting statistics.
This is a protest that will not harm LJ in the long run, as leaving LJ might do.
This is a protest that will demonstrate the power of community, as all users unite to support Basic users, the concept of adfree space, and our right to enjoy any interests we choose.
This is a protest that will educate the new owners that LJ is driven by user-created content.
How Can You Help?
DO post about this in your own LJ. DO post and comment about it in appropriate communities. DO turn off LoudTwitter and your RSS feeds for 24 hours.
DON'T forget to get permission from community mods before making an off-topic post or comment about the strike. DON'T be spammy with your posts or comments about the strike. DON'T forget to turn your LoudTwitter and RSS feeds back on when the strike is over.
Appropriate Times
The 24-hour strike will begin at the following times for the following locations:
Thursday, March 20, 2:00 PM -- Honolulu Thursday, March 20, 4:00 PM -- Anchorage Thursday, March 20, 5:00 PM -- San Francisco; Los Angeles Thursday, March 20, 6:00 PM -- Mexico City; Denver Thursday, March 20, 7:00 PM -- Chicago Thursday, March 20, 8:00 PM -- Montreal; New York Thursday, March 20, 9:00 PM -- Buenos Aires Midnight -- London Friday, March 21, 1:00 AM -- Paris Friday, March 21, 2:00 AM -- Istanbul Friday, March 21, 3:00 AM -- Moscow Friday, March 21, 4:00 AM -- Dubai Friday, March 21, 5:00 AM -- Islamabad Friday, March 21, 6:00 AM -- Bangladesh
Why Are We Striking?
We are holding the Content Strike because we want the new owners of LiveJournal to better understand the power and resolve of the LJ Community of Users.
We are holding the Content Strike because all of us, Paid, Permanent and Plus users as well as Basic, want to demonstrate our solidarity as a Community of Users. We do not consider Basic users to be freeloaders, we consider them to be valuable content-providers and Friends.
We are holding the Content Strike because we ache to do something to show our displeasure, and commenting on the news post -- even with cat macros -- just isn't powerful enough!
The strike has four terms:
1. Restore basic accounts for new account creation.
2. Inform users before any change to the site that affects how we use the site or demands on our resources.
3. Run change proposals by the Advisory Board and take their advice into account before implementation of any change.
4. Homophobia, misogyny, and racism must not be a part of the decision making processes about appropriate content of the site, including what user interests are deemed appropriate.
NOTE: We are aware that there may be good business decisions for eliminating Basic accounts. If Basic accounts are to be eliminated, though, that action should be taken only after approval of the Advisory Board and consultation with the LJ Community of Users.
Will This Make Any Difference?
The protests are making a difference. Within the last three hours (as of 3pm March 17, '08), the censored interests have been restored! If you look at the Popular Interests page, you will once again see the formerly filtered "fanfiction", "depression", "bisexuality" -- even "faeries". LiveJournal is once again presenting its true face to the world, not a sanitized blandness.
Please continue to spread the word about the Content Strike. We are not merely consumers. We are a Community of Users, and we will be heard.
LiveJournal Content Strike, Friday, March 21, midnight to midnight GMT. No posts. No comments. No content.

As promised, here are some pics of both my metal sculpture and my Merit show hanging in the main corridor of MCAD's main building. For those of you in the local area, check it out before Thursday when it gets taken down before noon. I know, a short time, but a short time of MADNESS!
Also, here's a better pic of the painting shown "Air Raid Sirens Blare" which I'm not sure I showed you guys or not. It was my Drawing Final last semester. The rest are behind the cut because I'm not going to overload you with too many pics.
I'm not too happy with the way the sculpture turned out in the end, but hopefully it'll be sold to help out Roadkill's widow. If you like it, bid on it and own a bit of metal MADNESS. It, too, was displayed for only a short time last week on the second floor of the main building at MCAD.

So...
I have a huge amount of photos of that sculpture but they're on my other computer so I'll upload and link them later for you folks. It was also one of the over 200 pieces of artwork (!!!) I donated towards the Roadkill Online Auction. That's right. Over 200 pieces of artwork. Some of it was a few years old. Some were colored prints (like the Sonic work I did for the CGI movie that never was), others were more personal pieces no one has ever seen but me. Lots of nekkid pics to for those of you with naughty minds.
As soon as I have links, you'll have links.
Speaking of links...
Guess what!?!?
